I recently lost two dads. Neither death should have come as a surprise. Both my dad and stepdad were in their 90s and in failing health. Still, I was shocked, and unprepared for the excruciating pain that comes with great loss.

At the same time — with some distance — I’m left feeling strangely hopeful.
