Discovering the obvious

Research confirms what every mom on the planet can tell you. Men sleep right through babies’ cries.

The U.K.’s Mindlab hooked volunteers in a sleep lab up to an electroencephalography (EEG) machine and played recorded noises. The experiment showed that men are most likely to stir over a car alarm, while women react fastest to a baby’s cries.

It turns out baby crying doesn’t even make the top ten list for what most disturbs a guy’s sleep.

Here’s what wakes men and women up:

Men

  1. Car alarm
  2. Wind howling
  3. Fly buzzing
  4. Snoring
  5. Noise from drains
  6. Crickets chirping
  7. Sirens
  8. Clock ticking
  9. Drilling/workmen
  10. Tap dripping

Women

  1. Baby crying
  2. Tap dripping
  3. Rowdiness outside
  4. Snoring
  5. Fly buzzing
  6. Drilling/workmen
  7. Sirens
