To My Daughter On Her 12th Birthday

Twelve years ago today, my daughter was born. I remember that first moment I saw her. The doctor had plopped her on my belly. She looked at me with these huge blue intense eyes. And I thought: Now that’s a person.

I’m not sure what I meant by this first thought. But it felt profound.

Today she’s 12. And I see I was right. She is quite a person.
